Blue borders on Rollover Buttons

Q. Why is there a blue border around my button?

A. Many times when you turn a rollover button into a link, it will give it a blue border. The border often turns purple after it has been clicked once and can be really annoying for a designer. At the bottom of the screen next to the target field and folder, there is a small field named border. Change it to 0px. This should eliminate your border. Be sure to hold shift while refreshing after putting the page again in order to test it.

Q. Why do my buttons jump, enlarge, disappear, or act otherwise incorrectly when I scroll over them?

A. The majority of the problems faced with buttons and what they do when clicked or hovered over can be adjusted in the Behaviors palette, which is located in the upper right hand corner of the screen in DreamWeaver. The settings in the behaviors palette determine what each element does and when. Navigating through the behaviors palette can be difficult and time consuming, however, so the ...

Q. Why do I get a # symbol (pound sign) when I click on my link/button?

A. The # symbol (pound sign) is the internet's way of telling you that there is a link established but there is no file to link to. In other words, you have created a button/link but have not told it what file to access. To fix this problem, open the page in DreamWeaver and click on the button/link. At the bottom of the page, click the folder next to the field labeled link or target. This opens a new window in which ...

Unwanted white outlines around rollover buttons

Q. Why do I get white outlines on my buttons?

A. While png8s are excellent image files to use when making buttons, they do not always handle transparencies well. If you have some white pixilated residue on your button, it is probably because you have transparencies in your button image. There are a few ways to fix this problem. The best suggestion would be to recreate your buttons. When you make them the second time, incorporate your background into the image and then line up the background ...

Q. How do I display a PowerPoint show or podcast?

A. There are two different options for displaying PowerPoint shows, podcasts, or other multimedia projects. The first option would be to link directly to the file. This method is recommended for full screen PowerPoint shows or other multimedia shows that are intended to be self-starting and be viewed in a full screen format. In order to link directly to the show, create a button/link. At the bottom of the page, click the folder next to the ...

Centering your web page

Q. Can I center my page using apdiv tags (or the DFM)?

A. Gladly, the answer is YES! Rob Johnson from Winter 2008 Semester discovered a fairly simple way to center your web page without using table or knowing much code. There is, however, a small amount of coding involved so if you do not want to get into it, keep it simple, and just left align your page. It still looks very professional.

The Basics of FTP connections

Q. What is an FTP connection and why is it important?

A. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. To put it in simple terms, it is the connection between you and the server. The server is basically a giant computer that remains constantly connected to the Internet. While in reality the system is far more complicated, you will eliminate many problems if you understand that you must upload to the server through the FTP in order to see things on the Internet. This is why it is so important that ...

Q. Why does it take a long time for my text to render when I am creating my web page in Photoshop?

A. This problem is most often seen when designing a web page in Photoshop for the first time. The tutorials explain that you need to set the document dimensions to 750px by 500px. At these dimensions, text should not take long to render as you type. If you do not change inches to pixels, however, and make a 750 inch by 500 inch document, your computer could stall or slow down when you try ...

Q. How can I move from one computer to another without losing all the information I have saved from the setup?

A. In order to create a valid connection from any computer using dreamweaver, you must setup a new site. Reading and following the tutorial provided under project tutorials can help you do this. Once you have a site setup, you must export it. (In other words, you must save it to your pen drive so you can take it with you to any computer.) Once you have set up site information by ...

Q. How many pixels per inch should I make my Photoshop document when first creating my web page design?

A. The quick answer is: It does not matter. If you think about it, ppi (which stands for pixels per inch) does not matter if you are never going to print whatever it is you are designing. Computer screens use pixels to measure the width and height of each element. That is why the same image can fill up the screen on some monitors and only take a portion of the screen space on another. ...
